Description

Conducting an informational interview with a professional currently working in a career field that interests you. You already completed a general informational interview in either BUS 115 or 216, and this one will be more focused on leadership.

As a reminder, you are not permitted to interview family members. Interviews can be done via phone, video call, in-person, or email thread, and they should last approximately 20-30 minutes. You are encouraged to consider the questions below, but you will likely need to include additional questions of your own to gather enough information for the assignment.

  • What is your current position title, and what do you do in your role? What are the typical work hours, responsibilities, etc.?
  • How long have you worked in this field? Where else have you worked? Have you made any major career changes?
  • What skills, abilities, and personal attributes do you think are essential to being a leader?
  • How would you describe your leadership style?
  • What do you enjoy most about leading others?
  • What challenges have you encountered as a leader? What did you learn from them?
  • What advice would you give to someone who is developing their leadership skills?

Once you have completed the informational interview, you need to send a follow-up “thank you” email to your person.

You will need to submit the following two items to earn full credit.

1) Some form of documentation/verification that your informational interview occurred. This can be done in a format that best fits the communication method in which you conducted the interview (e.g. Selfie, Screenshot of the video platform/call duration/ email thread, etc.)

2) A screenshot of the follow-up email thanking them for their time. Be sure to incorporate elements of a professional follow-up email that you learned earlier in the Blueprint Series. YOU ALREADY DID AN INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEW FOR ME. I AM ATTACHING IT FOR YOU. If you want you can use this but make it sound more about leadership.
