Description

  1. Complete a search of the Internet and list five federal agencies or even military agencies that handle criminal investigations.
  2. Use the Internet to search for a recent major crime in the Memphis Metro Area. Write a report based on the news network’s account of the incident, using the outline process mentioned in the chapter (please refer to Table 3.4 Evaluation Checklist for Reports and the Report Writing Checklist – in the chapter summary section of the book).
  3. Explore the auction Web site of Property Room, which takes the burden of unclaimed property off police departments’ hands. Categorize the types of evidence that are being auctioned. Does any of the evidence strike you as beyond what you would expect to be considered as physical evidence in a case? What are the pros and cons of disposing of evidence in this manner?
  4. Search the case of Tennessee v. Garner (1985). The case is readily available in both written and audio formats. Have them read or listen to the case and be familiar with the facts and legal decision. Since the case of Tennessee v. Garner involved the use of force against an unarmed youth, have the students discuss whether or not there would be a time to use deadly force against an “unarmed” suspect, based on the provision of the case.
