Description

For the final assignment of part 1, you will pitch a theoretical biotechnology to demonstrate your understanding of how and why microbes have an effect on their greater environment.

  1. Identify a different microbe in the same environment as your biotechnology microbe.
    1. Using google scholar , research your new microbe.
  2. Using this microbe, design a new, completely theoretical biotechnology that addresses an existing biological issue. Money is no object, go wild!
  3. Write a 1 single-spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman proposal on your biotechnology. The ideal proposal will include:
    1. A background on the problem you are addressing.
    2. The microbe you are using to address the problem.
    3. An in-depth description of the pathway, protein, or other biological feature that allows the microbe to address the problem.
    4. Potential pitfalls of this approach.
    5. A snazzy title and slogan for your new biotechnology.
    6. A picture of your new process/product, parts and microbes neatly labelled.
    7. Primary and secondary sources where you gained information about your microbe.

The purpose of this assignment is not necessarily to be 100% accurate. You can have parts of your biotechnology be “an unknown machine that turns oil into water”, or “a magic wizard who can summon endless helium-3”. What matters is that you understand what factors go into and come out of your chosen pathway. Some great discoveries can be made simply by reframing a problem. Your wizard, for instance, is not so far-fetched when we discover that there is an abundance of helium-3 on the Moon. By taking what we know and setting up a system around what we already have, we can break our larger problems into smaller, more manageable questions that we can then investigate.

Have fun with this assignment! Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and get messy! Strong choices!

to help you getting started this is the biotechonolgy and the microbe that has been talked about in the previous assignment :

  1. Research a biotechnology using microbes that has appeared within recent years and cite the news article/book/journal article that introduced you to the concept.answer: CFPS (Cell-free protein synthesis ).
  2. What microbes does it utilize to perform this task? v. natriegens
  3. This assignemnt wants you to choose a microbe similar to the above microbe from the environemt side and create your own biotechonolgy to discuss the prompt
