Description
Focuses on the same essential concepts from professional writing (especially revision, directives, and concision) that we used in our previous assignments. Here we add the additional element of emails.
To complete this assignment, you must
- Review BOTH the audio interview and the text transcript of Cal Newport’s arguments http://blogs.wgbh.org/innovation-hub/2021/3/19/ema…(2021, March 5). His interview is located on http://blogs.wgbh.org/innovation-hub/, a useful online/audio resource because of its range of topics and their relevance to your careers.
- Analyze the rhetorical and design strategies (e.g. narrative, direct address, colorful/memorable metaphors and imagery, lists) in both versions.
- Summarize your analysis into two (2) elements:
1. One (1) well-written paragraph that summarizes your analysis of these two versions of Newport’s interview.
For example, you might compare and contrast these two versions arguing that one is more effective than the other, or you might argue that both are equally effective. Regardless of your claim, your paragraph should be effective and efficient; to do so, you should:1. Focus on your essential points through the 5-7 sentence guideline.
2. Support your claims with examples from both formats.
For example, you might emphasize how the audio version is more persuasive than the written version because listening to a human voice is more engaging than reading words; conversely, you could argue that the written version is more effective because it communicates the interview’s essential points in a few bulleted lists which takes less time than listening to Newport speak. You could also argue that both effectively present their contents using two different methods and that multiple versions/platforms enable more audiences to access the information as best fits their needs.
Note that I am NOT requiring quotes from this assignment, but you could include them if you think doing so would persuade me of your authority.3. Maintain effective coherence and unity through devices like transitionals.
4. Conclude with our 1/3 pointing backwards-2/3 pointing forwards stress on benefits.
5. Use rhetorical strategies like direct address, the you-attitude, and the bottom line.
Again, use those that you think are most effective here to persuade me of your authority.2. One (1) well-written sentence that defines the source’s bottom line and uses the format:
BOTTOM LINE: jkags;fkgbsakdj. <–Obviously, you would replace the string of letters in this example with your sentence. - Organize your document in the following order:
1. Your paragraph summary
2. A blank line
3. Your bottom line sentence - Format your document using 1.5 line spacing and a common font like 12 pt. Calibri or Verdana.
