Description
Prompt: In this unit we learn about the history of our democracy and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. On November 6th, 2018 we had a midterm election that choose U.S. senators and representatives as well as a number of state and local officials from governors on down to local justices of the peace. Midterm elections have historically low voter turnout (only about 40% of those eligible actually vote – and even less in Texas!). Consider what you’ve read in the chapters and comment on the following:
1. What is necessary for a democracy to thrive? Can it still exist without the things you mentioned?
2. Why are so few Americans inclined to participate in the process that determines so much about their lives?
3. Do Americans even want a democracy? Is there a better alternative?
4. What question do you have for the class?
