Establishing the foundation.

Please begin your personal and professional leadership development plan with the following:

  • A one-sentence mission statement;
  • A one-sentence vision statement;
  • A one-sentence purpose statement;
  • A one-sentence statement that identifies your top five moral values aspirations.

Areas of Development.

Please include the following eight areas of development in your plan: Spiritual, psychological, social, physical well-being, family and significant others, ethical, career and financial management. Please note that in each area, five or more attributes are given as examples. These are not meant to be an exhaustive list. You may wish to address others, and you may not wish to address any of the ones listed. However, you need to minimally address one attribute in each category.

For example, in the area of psychological development (#2 below), there are five attributes listed; specifically intellectual capacity building, personal discipline, self-awareness, self-confidence and self-worth. You would minimally choose one of these five OR you may choose another psychological attribute to develop within your plan. Bottom line is that you need to minimally address one attribute for each of the eight development areas.

  1. Spiritual attributes (courage, empathy, faith, gratitude, hope, humility, service)
  2. Psychological attributes (intellectual capacity building, self-discipline, self-awareness, self-confidence, self-worth)
  3. Social attributes (communicative, culturally competent, emotionally intelligent, persuasive, respectful)
  4. Physical well-being (cleanliness, commitment to work life balance, nutritionally healthy life style, regular exercise, preventative health screenings)
  5. Family/significant others (acceptance, active listening, encouragement, respectful, trusting, unconditional love)
  6. Ethical attributes (acting with integrity, promoting equity, taking accountability, trustworthy, valuing diversity through inclusivity)
  7. Career attributes (autonomy, balanced perspective and interest as related to people and earnings, team orientation, service orientation)
  8. Financial management attributes (debt management, organized budget, paying bills timely, savings plan, tracking credit score)

As related to the attribute you choose, develop your overall goal and time targeted action steps. The key here is to minimally have three time targeted dates with accompanying actions steps identified for each goal, dependent upon the goal and a reasonable time line for you to achieve it.
