This assignment will help you: explain the purpose and functions of public relations; describe how public relations builds and maintains relationships and persuades public opinion; give examples to illustrate how public relations has been used to influence public opinion and promote change public opinion; explain the importance of ethical behavior in public relations; give examples of various types of public relations a company may use; and, successfully write a press release and develop a basic media kit.

PR planning folds into and supports overall business objectives and planning. In order to plan a PR person must first use the five steps below to implement strategic PR:
- Identify and Define the Situation (Situational Analysis).
- Identify the Overall Business Objectives (Business Objectives).
- Identify and Define the Public Relations Objectives (PR Objectives).
- Identify Strategies to achieve the objectives (Strategies).
- Identify the PR Programming Elements or tactics (PR Program Elements).
Follow this handy 5-step process to create a simple and focused hypothetical public relations plan for the following hypothetical nonprofit and event.
Case Study Details:
The Save Puppies On Time (SPOT) Animal Shelter is overwhelmed. Population in the county where it is located has grown, and so has the amount of abandoned dogs, unwanted puppies, and even under-the-table dog fights, making the number of rescued animals in need of adoption high. The shelter has come up with the idea that they should hold a series of events to get the dogs adopted quickly into homes. Like many shelters, they want to hold clear the shelter events. Both the mayor of the biggest town in the county, as well as the 3 of the 8 county supervisors sit on the board of the shelter, as well as the director of the local symphony, who has 2 rescue dogs herself. 2 local Girl Scout troops and one high school Octagon Club service organization regularly volunteer at the shelter. Funding is tight.
Using the process outlined above, populate a hypothetical PR plan to meet the publicity goals for the SPOT Shelter, including a timeline and measurement of the recommendations. Youll need to make specific PR recommendations that would help publicize the event(s). You will need to create all of the steps above to get to your PR plan. Use the facts in the case study to extrapolate the business case and information, and then come up with a recommended plan.
