In this fast-paced business world, there are several unique challenges that human resources face today such as globalization, changing workforce, technology, competition, cost pressures, and restructuring. The role of HR has shifted from just processing employees’ paperwork to maintaining strategic position in the organization. While globalization has created an open market for companies to bring in the employees with talent from worldwide, it has also created challenges to the HR as the HR needs to consider and adapt to difference in wage, culture, legal and political factors (Agarwal, 2017). Furthermore, technology changes also create challenge to HR as every employee need to be up-to-date with the changing technology. Hence, it is essential for the HR to train the employees for the required support and training. Apart from this, there is huge growth in job shifts, skills shortages, changing workforce i.e. diverse workforce in terms of racial, ethnic, gender and age, and finally ethical challenges (Valentine et al., 2020).

I think that one of the major HR challenge that my workplace where I used to work was facing was retaining talented employees or job shifts. I used to work in an educational consulting firm and there are numbers of educational consultants who are trained to assist students and their families to help them choose best college or universities and apply best strategy to get accepted. However, once employees are trained and are able to understand the basics of consulting, they tend to leave the jobs. Many times, the employees left the job because they believed they had more opportunities to hone their skills and they seek for opportunities for their career development elsewhere. Like Valentine et al. (2020) mentioned that there is increasing demand for the freelancing for those who have training, experiences and backgrounds. However, this has huge impact on the cost of the organization as they need to hire and train the new employees from the basic again.

There are many challenges facing HR today. These challenges include but are not limited to talent shortages, sexual harassment claims, performance management, succession planning, diversity and inclusion training efforts and programs, and discrimination claims. Currently, my workplace is experience issues with a talent shortage. One of our lines of business requires a specific scientific skill set and experience with running a particular kind of machine. The Talent Acquisition process has been able to identify good candidates, but they are either still working on finishing their PhD’s, and therefore not eligible to be hired on in the near term – or they require visa sponsorship which is not something the business is pursuing, due to cost, for that level of role. Valentine et al. (2020) stated ways to manage through a talent shortage can include working overtime hours and allowing retirees to work creative schedules to phase out of the workplace rather than ending abruptly, and both of these tactics are being leveraged by my organization (p. 55).

Diversity and inclusion efforts are also something my workplace has been focusing on at a global level. With various diverse characteristics finally becoming more well-known/accepted in the workplace, such as an employee identifying as trans, it’s become important for my organization to implement diversity, inclusion, and sensitivity training to ensure all are aware of the evolving aspects of being an inclusive workplace and understanding that not all diversity is visibly apparent – you never know who you may be offending with un-educated, exclusive, or unconsciously bias comments. As Valentine et al. (2020) stated, the key to successful D&I training is to acknowledge that regardless of what beliefs someone holds, in the workplace the expectation and requirement is to treat everyone in a professional, respectful way (p. 100).
