The first student post:I think I liked the Middle East culture the best out of all that we studied. What I found interesting from the Middle East is that music is more looked down upon rather than praised when it is in certain settings. I feel that in most cultures, music is something that is really looked up to, but this is not really the case in the Middle East. It is looked at as “illegitimate” and should only be used for family celebrations or for religious purposes. A musical activity that I found really intriguing was the musical rituals or drum circles that some cultures would practice. This can be seen in the African culture with the drum circles and in Indonesia with the trance rituals and even in Japan when they would perform with costumes. I really liked the use of the drums in all of the different cultures and most, if not all, cultures used a lot of drums in their practices. I feel that I know so much more about how music is viewed in each part of the world and I feel that I learned so much from the course as well.

The second student post:
I thought the Middle East was the most interesting out of them all, in my opinion. The two main types of music are Halal music or Haram music. I had never known a type of music that involves separation due to the legitness between one another until then. Like for example, halal is considered believed to have only vocal music allowed while haram music doesn’t allow instruments in it. I thought the instruments from Latin America and the Caribbeans were interesting how much has changed with the influences from different countries into making their own such as the saw, goatskin drums, accordion, etc. The activities of plays of the biblical from the Latin Americas shows given to the audience was a unique and traditional play for all to see. I hope it’s an excellent experince for everyone into seeing these cultures and what much good comes out of them. I had have learned so much from this class and the subject! It has been a great experience and I hope to see more out of it in the future.
