A nuclear reactor power plant utilizing water as the working fluid is to be analyzed in this problem. The reactor vessel (assume like a boiler in this problem) receives water from a pump and with heat addition (in the boiler) produces water at 1500 lbf/in.2 and 500 F. The hightemperature compressed liquid from the reactor vessel is throttled into a flash evaporator separating the fluid into vapor (saturated) and liquid at 300 lbf/in.2. The fraction of the water that flashes into vapor flows to a turbine, while that which remains liquid flows into a mixing chamber. The fluid leaving the turbine at 1 lbf/in.2 is condensed and pumped into the mixing chamber. To complete the cycle, the combined fluid exiting the mixing chamber is pumped into the reactor. Turbine and pump efficiencies are given as 85% and 80% respectively. Assume dead state conditions are atmospheric at 77 F.
- Draw a neat and clearly labeled schematic of the plant arrangement.
- Represent the plant processes on P-v, T-s and h-s diagrams. Identify ideal and realprocesses on your diagrams with identifiable symbols that MATCH those on theschematic.
- Calculate the availability per pound mass of the water leaving the reactor vesse
- Determine the quality of the fluid in the flash evaporator. In terms of mass, what does this number (the quality) represent relative to the mass flow leaving the reactor?
- Determine the work required of the pumps per pound mass of water leaving the reactor.
- Determine the work output per pound mass of water leaving the reactor.
- Determine the energy per pound mass received by the water flowing through the reactor.
- Determine the thermal efficiency of the plant. Comment on your result.
- By selecting an appropriate control volume, calculate the entropy generation inthe flash evaporator per pound mass of water entering. What is the irreversibility in the flash evaporator per pound mass of water entering?
- By selecting an appropriate control volume, calculate the entropy generation inthe mixing chamber per pound mass of water leaving. What is the irreversibility of the mixing chamber process per pound mass of water leaving?
- Write a summary of your results and provide comments on the practicality of suchand energy system and justify your results on sound thermodynamic principles.
