Question Description

I don’t know how to handle this Cultural Studies question and need guidance.

1. What do the ‘peach culture’ and ‘coconut culture’ really mean?

2. After hearing some examples of cultural situations shared by Mr. Julien Bourrelle throughout this video, what has this done to help you develop an improved appreciation for culture and cultural differences when you travel? How might this shape your behaviors as a traveler?

3. Based on what you have learned in class, as well as what Mr. Bourrelle shares in the Ted Talk, reflect on how you might demonstrate a greater awareness of your knowledge here at home as a local community member?

This video is a Ted Talk where Mr. Julien Bourrelle shares his knowledge in this presentation “Learn a New Culture”. Mr. Julien Bourrelle has been focusing his profession on how culture shapes behavior; he also works with a publishing house who’s mission is to provide tools that help readers (through books they publish) better understand cultural differences in order to benefit best from diversity.

The purpose of listening to this video and answering the questions are directly tied to specific learning outcomes we strive for in this class. These include integrating knowledge about the environment, population, culture, the economy, politics, etc in travel destinations across the world; demonstrate a greater awareness of how to travel behaviors are interrelated with the lives of people in tourist receiving places; and, lastly, develop an improved appreciation for the places and landscapes encountered with tourism development and travel behaviors.
