Description
Paragraph 1: Find two different videos of a chemical reaction: one fast reaction, one slow reaction. Describe these in writing. Because you are describing information from another course, cite the information. Then describe how you know which is which. It would be good, then, the segue to the next topic: rate laws. For a transition sentence, you might answer, “What is the relationship between rate and a rate law?”
Paragraph 2: Then find two different chemical reactions, each obeying a different rate law. Because you wouldn’t know these reactions off the top of your head, you should cite the source of the information! Provide the chemical equation for each process and then write out the form of each rate law. Where there is correspondence between the stoichiometric coefficients in the equation and the exponents in the rate law, mention this. Where there is no correspondence, highlight that as well. Conclude with the following notion (in your own words): Rate laws must be determined by experimental measurements. This makes a good transition to the next part of your introduction: the purpose of the iodination of acetone experiment (i.e., determination of the rate law and rate constant, k, for that particular reaction.)
Here’s what TAs will look for in this assignment:
- 4 pieces of information that have been properly cited and referenced. (2 ptseach)
- 1 good transitional sentence from paragraph 1 to paragraph 2. (2 pts)
