Hi, !

Excellent post this week.

As we have learned, personal values impact one’s approach on leadership. Moreover, personal values are unique for each individual. Based on this premise, how will you, as the senior leader of the emergency department, handle a situation wherein your personal values are in conflict with one of your staff’s personal values? What steps can be taken by leadership to remain respectful while also getting your point across? Handling this situation appropriately can lead to mutual respect with staff.

Regards,

Paolo

Using what you have learned about both respect and interpersonal connections, develop a post in which you discuss how you will help the second shift team become more respectful? Reply Martina:

For this week’s discussion, we evaluate the importance of ethics and respect in relation to leadership in healthcare. Respect within ethics is an essential aspect of an organization. Respect and ethical behavior creates and develops a well versed environment for patients, staff, and other individuals. A environment composed of respect allows staff members to provide better care to patients, while also working better together as a team. Respect is important because it “…is the value that multiplies the desire of both the leader and follower to work harder and deliver consistently excellent performance” (Dye, 2017, p.1). In addition to respect, ethics and integrity is important to uphold as a leader in healthcare. As defined, “Ethics is a person’s moral scope, and integrity is the person’s capacity for staying within that moral scope” (Dye, 2017, p.1).

For this specific scenario example, being a senior leader in the emergency department – there is a lack of respect among the second shift team. As a leader, I would ensure that this does not get out of hand. With a lack of respect among a team, this can lead to consequences in different areas, creating a bad environment for everyone. Therefore, I would immediately create an atmosphere of respect. In doing so, I would evaluate and analyze the specific behavior taking place and what may be causing it. In addition, I would develop a feedback system where the team can “…be given an opportunity to respond, ask questions, or simply confirm his understanding” (Dye, 2017, p.12). By allowing the team to react and be open to their feelings towards work, it will allow me as a leader to then make changes. As a leader, I would also establish more collaboration and openness with one another. More collaboration will allow a team work better together while minimizing mistakes. At the same time, I would be an active and attentive listener to the needs of the second shift team. Based on the feedback and observations, I would also make rounds around the department and speak to them about this behavior. Overall, it would be very important for me as a leader to establish an equal, respectful, and dynamic environment. No matter a person’s position in a team, everyone deserves the same amount of respect. Establishing a culture and environment rooted in respect can change make a team better.
